Uncontrolled golden retriever barking is uncommon for this breed. Usually good tempered and very sociable, golden retrievers seldom bark unless provoked. Although this is true, there are always exceptions to the usual norms. Sometimes, because of the environment that a puppy golden retriever grew up in, he instinctively barks even when unprovoked. Barking sometimes becomes an irritating habit of your dog. If you’re the type of owner who would want your dog to bark when someone unfamiliar to him knocks on your door, then just let him be. Barking, growling, and howling are natural to dogs regardless of breed. You would often see you puppies growling or barking a little bit when excited during a play and when trying to get your attention. This is when you should start correcting the behavior. When your puppy gives out small and tiny barks during play or when asking for food, give the command “stop barking”. When he stops, praise him or give him a treat right away. Be consistent in your command to help him realize what you really want him to do.
Consistency and training to control golden retriever barking should be done as early as possible to make it easier on you and your dog. If your dog gives out a bark to tell you he needs to go out to pee, even though he is ultimately being a good dog, still give the command “stop barking”. If your dog barks when he wants to enter the house again, command him to “stop barking”. Your dog will then realize that barking is something he should not be doing regardless of the reason.
Most of the time, dogs bark for attention. Especially for dogs that are left alone in confined areas for long periods of time, they get bored and often take the hobby of barking. Avoid this by always taking time to play with your pets. Take your pet out for a walk when you get home or before you leave, leave them toys they can play with, leave light music on, or even try leaving a mirror that is securely attached to the wall. Seeing his reflection makes him think he has a fellow pooch there with him to play with.
Unwanted golden retriever barking is a problem that you can easily avoid and stop. Don’t think you can do it overnight though or expect it to be removed all together. With a little patience, a lot of love and encouragement, your pet will surely grow to be a well behaved dog.
