So you got a new puppy… CONGRATULATIONS! There will be a lot of fun and loving moments to come for you and your new puppy… no doubt about it, a very good friend in the making. For a smooth and more congenial relationship though, start off with a good and healthy golden retriever puppy training. Give your pet all the time and patience that he would need to learn basic house rules and guide him as he learns the dos and don’ts that your lifetime friendship has to follow. Start while he is young and see better, more favorable results. Here are a few tips on how you can house train your golden retriever.
The first step you should consider is buying your new furry friend a cage or a crate. Buy something that would be perfect for him as a bed, nothing too big or too small. The reason for this is that dogs would not want to eliminate where they sleep, it is in their nature. So if you get a crate that’s too big, he would still be able to eliminate in the corners while still comfortably pick spots to sleep in. Expect to change the crate once he becomes bigger. Otherwise, get a large crate and make a divider so as to be able to adjust the crate size as your dog grows.
The next step in your golden retriever puppy training is for you to pick a spot in the garden where you want your puppy to do his business. Every time you bring him out to do his thing, bring him out to the same spot. Repeatedly doing so will leave your dog’s scent in that chosen spot and make him understand what that spot is for. Also use a command. Use this command all the time until your dog understands and be able to eliminate when you tell him to.
The next step for you to follow is for you to be patient and vigilant. Carefully observe your puppy for signs of wanting to get out of his crate. When you see signs such as your puppy going around in circles and sniffing around, bring him to the chosen spot right away. Give the command, if he eliminates don’t forget to praise and reward him. If he doesn’t, bring him back to his crate. You don’t have to scold him… it just wasn’t time to go yet.
When accidents happen and your golden retriever relieves himself in areas where he is not supposed to, show your disapproval but neither scold nor hit him. These actions would give your pet the understanding that you do not approve of him eliminating in front of you.
Golden retriever puppy training, especially house training, take a lot of patience and a good amount of effort from both pet owner and pet. If you do it consistently, lovingly, and patiently, your pet would be more than willing to follow your rules.
