Dogs are man’s best friend. They are good companions, loyal, and very loving. Golden retrievers are no exception – known to be great family pets, they are intelligent, sweet, devoted, lovable, and polite. They are very gentle and friendly with children and they are happy to have other pets around them. But like any other breed of dog, there is also a need to train a golden retriever. One crazy stage that all dogs pass through is chewing. No matter what breed or size, dogs especially when young, love to chew. They’ll chew on just about anything – from shoes, books, newspaper, cables – anything that they can reach, and golden retrievers are no exception. So when your dog starts to chew, what do you do?
Puppies chew because they are teething. However, when your dog’s chewing becomes too destructive, there must be other reasons behind it. Your dog might be bored and needs some play time. Especially for dogs that are left alone for long periods of time, they entertain themselves by playing with whatever they can get their teeth into. The solutions to this are simple, always have time to play with your dog, give him his own chewing/teething toys, and don’t leave stuff for him to reach and chew on.
Golden retrievers require daily exercise. Letting them play in the backyard a few hours a day or taking them out on daily walks are excellent ways for them to release excess energy, and not to mention a good way for them to exercise. Doing these activities daily will also lessen your dog’s boredom and therefore lessen chewing problems.
Another good way for you to train a golden retriever to not chew your “stuff” is by giving him stuff / toys of his own. These toys should not at all resemble your “stuff” or any household item so as not to confuse him. You may also want to consider getting toys where you can insert small pieces of treats, this will entice you pet to concentrate on his toys rather than your shoes.
Lastly, if you don’t want your golden retriever to chew on your belongings, keep them away from him. Don’t leave your Jimmy Choos, your first edition book, or your kid’s homework lying around the floor or low desks that your pet can easily reach. Simply put, take responsibility for your things.
Dog chewing is something you would have to deal with for all breeds of dog. It is natural for dogs to chew as it is natural for cats to scratch and purr. The good news is that you can always avoid too much destruction because you can always train a golden retriever. Golden retrievers are one of those dog breeds that are easily trained, so no worries. Just give your pet some time and a lot of love and he’ll get over chewing in no time!
